What is skin cancer screening?
Every day, skin cells die and new ones form to replace them in a process controlled by DNA. Skin cancer can form when this process does not work properly because of damage to DNA. New cells may form when they are not needed, or older cells may not die, both of which can cause a growth of tissue known as a tumor. DNA damage is often a result of ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps. In some cases, skin cancer affects areas of the skin that have not been exposed to the sun. Certain factors, such as fair skin, moles, a weakened immune system, heredity and age, also increase the risk of skin cancer.

That is why regular skin checks are so important, especially if you have a history of sunbathing or tanning bed use.
At What Age Should I Have Skin Cancer Screenings?
Ideally, you want to get skin cancer screenings in your 20s and 30s. However, there are other factors that could potentially warrant you getting an earlier screening. These factors include having a family history of skin cancer, having moles on your body and being in the sun for prolonged periods of time. The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause your skin cells to age prematurely. Tanning beds also emit UV rays and are actually the leading cause of skin cancer.
Can the Signs of Skin Cancer Go Unnoticed?
Unfortunately, it is possible for skin cancer to go unnoticed. It is not always the case, but there are instances where people develop skin cancer and are completely unaware of it. This is typically due to the symptoms not being noticeable and this can go on for years.
Some of the skin cancer symptoms that usually make themselves known are swelling of the lymph nodes, unexpected weight loss or feeling short of breath.
